The uses of argon gas are multifaceted. Argon’s role in the lighting industry includes its use in incandescent bulbs and fluorescent lamps. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are enabled by argon in the same way that Wi-Fi may be enabled in smartphones. For instance, argon prevents the filament in incandescent bulbs from evaporating, thus extending the lifespan of the bulb. On the other hand, argon is used in starting gas inside fluorescent lamps to help initiate the electrical discharge that ultimately produces light. Furthermore, argon can function as a cryogenic fluid in the field of cryogenics. Superconducting materials found in MRI machines and particle accelerators require low temperature cooling. Argon’s low boiling point (which leads to extremely low temperatures) makes this possible. Some mass spectrometry research also makes use of argon as an ionization gas to ionize sample molecules for analysis.
