Tesla has opened vehicle-to-load (V2L) power output to the Model 3, Model Y and Model Y L in Malaysia, with a rated output of about 3kW — but only on newly built cars, and the required outlet adapter is not on sale yet. If you already own a car in Malaysia, whether a Tesla or anything else, a standalone pure sine wave inverter connected to a 12V battery is still the way to get AC power today. Here is what the announcement actually includes, where its limits sit, and how to size an inverter if V2L does not apply to your car.
On October 17–18, Tesla announced the updated Model 3 for Malaysia and opened V2L — called Powershare — across the new Model 3, Model Y and Model Y L line-up. Until now, V2L in Malaysia was limited to the Model Y L, which launched there in April. The function works through a Tesla Outlet Adapter that plugs into the car's charge port and provides a standard AC socket.
According to Tesla Malaysia's published specifications, the adapter is rated at 230V with a maximum continuous current of 13A. At a power factor of 1.0, that works out to roughly 2.99kW — about 3kW of continuous output. Note that this figure is calculated from the official voltage and current rating, not a measured test result. It is also higher than the figures quoted for some other markets, simply because 230V markets use a different specification from 120V markets.

For a single appliance or a few small ones, yes — about 3kW is genuinely useful. It will comfortably run a camping fridge, lights, a laptop, power-tool chargers, a rice cooker or a kettle, and it will keep a home refrigerator running during a blackout. V2L spreading to Southeast Asia, with a proper 230V output, is a step in the right direction.
The ceiling shows when loads stack up. An air conditioner, an electric water heater, a microwave and a kettle together can exceed 3kW quickly, and motor-driven appliances draw a short surge above their rated watts when they start. About 3kW is a ceiling, not a starting point — you have to budget every load against it, and some combinations simply will not fit.
What are the three catches Malaysian buyers should know?V2L is a hardware function. It is limited to cars built from this month onward, and older Model 3 and Model Y cars cannot gain V2L through a software update or a retrofit. Owners can check their own car under Software → Additional Vehicle Information, where Powershare support is listed if it is enabled. Malaysia's existing Tesla fleet — every car sold before this month — is outside the feature, however new it still feels.
The Tesla Outlet Adapter is already listed in the Tesla Shop Malaysia at RM350, according to local media reports of the store listing — but the page still shows it as "coming soon", so it is not yet available to buy. In other words, the cars have the function first; the accessory that unlocks it is still on its way, and it is a separate purchase.
Unlike a battery-and-inverter setup, there is no way to raise the output later. The roughly 3kW limit is fixed by the car and the adapter. If your loads grow — a second air conditioner, a workshop tool, a bigger fridge — the car cannot grow with them.
Who still needs a standalone car inverter?Quite a few drivers, in Malaysia and in every other market where V2L is tied to the newest models:
A standalone inverter works from the vehicle's 12V battery (or a separate leisure battery), so it does not depend on the car's model year, brand or market. For 230V markets such as Malaysia, that means choosing an inverter built for 230V output — exactly the specification supplied for export markets by manufacturers such as Zhejiang Sunrise New Energy Co., Ltd.

The method is the same one you would use to judge whether 3kW of V2L is enough:
Wiring matters as much as wattage: use cables rated for the current, fit the correct fuse close to the battery, and keep the inverter ventilated. A correctly sized inverter on a healthy battery will run a fridge and lights for hours; for longer outages, pair it with a larger leisure battery or a home storage battery.

No. V2L is enabled by hardware fitted to newly built cars. Cars built before this month cannot add it through software or retrofit, which owners can confirm in the car's Software → Additional Vehicle Information screen.
Based on Tesla Malaysia's official adapter specification of 230V and 13A maximum continuous current, the calculated continuous output is about 2.99kW — roughly 3kW. This is a rating calculation, not a measured figure.
Not yet. Local reports show it listed in the Tesla Shop Malaysia at RM350 but still marked "coming soon", so the adapter is a separate purchase that had not gone on sale when the V2L expansion was announced.
Add up the watts of everything you will run at once, add surge headroom for motors, and pick the next pure sine wave size up. Small charging and lighting loads suit 300W–1000W; camping and fridge setups usually land at 1500W–3000W; heavy tools or several large appliances need 4000W–6000W.
